Traveling to the San Francisco Bay Area can be exciting, but navigating a new city may feel a bit overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. In San Francisco, most airports, train stations, and major transit stops provide clear English signs, which will guide you to taxi stands, rideshare pickup areas, BART stations, shuttle bus stops, and other key locations.
If you find that signs are unclear or need extra help, don’t hesitate to approach a nearby information desk or airport staff — they are generally friendly and accustomed to assisting travelers from around the world.
Tip: Having your hotel address saved on your phone or written down can make taking taxis or rideshares much easier.
There are three major airports near the San Francisco Bay Area:
Most international flights arrive at and depart from SFO. It offers convenient transportation options including Uber/Lyft, taxis, airport shuttles, rental cars, and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) directly to downtown San Francisco.
A popular alternative to SFO, often used by domestic and low-cost airlines. From Oakland International Airport (OAK), travelers can reach downtown San Francisco in approximately 30–45 minutes by Uber, Lyft, or taxi, depending on traffic. The airport also connects to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system via the Oakland Airport Connector, providing convenient access to San Francisco and East Bay cities. Rental cars and shared airport shuttles are also available for added flexibility.
SJC is the most convenient airport for Silicon Valley, South Bay, and nearby cities. From San José Mineta International Airport (SJC), travelers can reach San Francisco in approximately 45–70 minutes by Uber, Lyft, or taxi, depending on traffic. A shuttle connection to Caltrain provides direct train service to San Francisco, and rental cars and shared airport shuttles are also available.
BART network provides fast, affordable rail service across the Bay Area, linking airports, downtown areas, and major cities. Tickets can be purchased at station machines using cash or credit, and staff are available onsite for assistance.
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has a BART station inside the International Terminal with direct service to downtown San Francisco (about 30 minutes), the Mission District, Oakland and other East Bay cities, plus many hotels near Market Street and Union Square.
From Oakland International Airport (OAK), take the Oakland Airport Connector to Coliseum Station and transfer to BART trains toward San Francisco.
Trains typically run every 15–20 minutes.BART is often faster than driving during rush hour. It is the recommended option for airport transfers if you are staying near downtown San Francisco.
From San José Mineta International Airport(SJC), travelers can take the airport shuttle to Milpitas BART Station or Berryessa/North San José Station and connect to BART for service to downtown stations such as Powell Street, Montgomery Street, or Embarcadero. Uber, Lyft, taxis, rental cars, and shared airport shuttles are also available for direct door-to-door travel, typically taking 45–70 minutes depending on traffic.
Caltrain network provides fast, affordable rail service connecting San José, the Peninsula, and downtown San Francisco. Trains run frequently, and tickets can be purchased at station ticket machines, through the Caltrain mobile app, or using a Clipper Card. Station staff are available to assist if needed.
From San José Mineta International Airport (SJC), take the airport shuttle (Route 60) to Santa Clara Transit Center or San Jose Diridon Station, where you can board Caltrain to San Francisco’s 4th & King Station. From there, local Muni buses, Metro, or a short rideshare can take you to Union Square or nearby hotels.
Several public bus systems serve San Francisco and the greater Bay Area, providing convenient connections within cities and between neighboring communities.
San Francisco buses
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (Muni) operates an extensive network of buses and light rail throughout San Francisco.
